A new global initiative to protect kidney patients in times of crisis

As part of the goals of the ASN-ERA-ISN Kidney Support Initiative, the ISN has partnered with Direct Relief, the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), and the European Renal Association (ERA) to launch the Global Humanitarian Kidney Support Initiative.

The initiative aims to strengthen preparedness and coordination for kidney care in crisis settings, combining global nephrology expertise with humanitarian logistics to support patients in areas affected by conflict, natural disasters, or fragile health systems, ensuring those who rely on continuous treatment receive the care they need.

“Kidney patients in many parts of the world already have fragile access to care. When disaster strikes, the risk of interruption or disruption of needed care becomes rapidly acute,” shares Professor Ali Abu-Alfa, chair ISN Renal Disaster Preparedness Working Group. “This initiative strengthens collaboration between professional renal societies and humanitarian organizations, allowing the ISN to contribute its expertise and help connect local providers with urgently needed support.”
