“The ISN community has profoundly influenced my education and practice”: ISN Mentee shaping kidney care in the Balkans
Mirha Pjanic, a nephrology trainee from Bosnia and Herzegovina, is mentored by Nikolina Basic-Jukic from Zagreb, Croatia, with additional guidance from Mirna Aleckovic-Halilovic from the University Clinical Center in Tuzla — Dr. Pjanic’s home institution.
She shares, “Being a member of the ISN community has profoundly influenced my education and practice of renal medicine at my university hospital and in my country. I hope my work will make a meaningful difference in my community, benefit my colleagues, and improve care for our kidney patients.”
Her goals as an ISN Mentee include strengthening regional transplant collaborations across the Balkans, improving care for living kidney donors by establishing a dedicated outpatient clinic in Tuzla, and advancing clinical research in transplantation with guidance from her mentor. She also plans to complete her dissertation on kidney donor evaluation methods and hopes to secure funding for her research project by applying to the ISN Clinical Research Program.

Dr. Pjanic attended the ISN Scientific Writing Course in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 2023 and received third prize for her Mentorship abstract at WCN’25. Her center was previously in an ISN Sister Renal Centers Program partnership with the Royal Preston Hospital in the UK. Dr. Pjanic continues to build on this legacy, strengthening regional ties in the Balkans.
