Partnering for progress: ISN collaborates on a new five-year pilot in East Africa to advance kidney care

Building on a strong foundation of collaboration and training in East Africa, including the establishment of an ISN Regional Training Center in Kenya, the ISN is proud to partner on a promising new pilot project aimed at strengthening kidney care capacity in the region. The long-term vision is for this pilot to serve as a model for similar regional initiatives worldwide.

The “Capacity Accelerator for Regional Empowerment in NEPHrology – East Africa” Project (CARE-NEPH East Africa Project) is a five-year initiative led by the Kenya Renal Association, the Uganda Kidney Foundation, the Ethiopia Kidney Association, and the Nephrology Society of Tanzania.*

This initiative is a visionary step toward transforming kidney care in East Africa. Jointly developed by these national societies in response to local needs and supported by the ISN through its existing grant programs, It has been shaped with guidance from past ISN Core Programs Committee chair and current advisor Tushar Vachharajani, and from the current chairs of this committee, Rob Walker and Marcelo Orias.

The CARE-NEPH East Africa Project will, over the next five years, work toward:

  • Increasing the number of nephrologists in East Africa through training opportunities
  • Enhancing the specialization and expertise in nephrology subspecialties in the region
  • Improving kidney care skills in local healthcare professionals in the region

This innovative partnership aims to create a lasting, self-sustaining system of kidney care excellence in the region.
