Stand out and avoid pitfalls: Tips for abstract submitters
WCN Abstract Working Group co-chairs Alessia Fornoni (left) and Bianca Davidson
According to WCN Abstract Working Group co-chair* Alessia Fornoni, WCN is “designed to promote ‘bedside to research and back’ networking opportunities with a global impact.” Submitting an abstract is therefore not only about presenting results but also about:
- Gaining visibility
- Building connections
- Receiving valuable feedback from a diverse community
Submit your abstract by October 22!
So, what makes an abstract stand out, Dr. Fornoni explains: “Any innovative and significant data that promote a global impact on kidney health tends to get my attention.” By contrast, abstracts that are overly descriptive and limited in scope risk being overlooked. Her advice: “Tell us about the impact of your data!”
Her fellow co-chair, Bianca Davidson, underscores the importance of accessibility: “For basic science abstracts, make sure the information is relayed in a way that a clinician can understand.” For young investigators, presenting an abstract can be career-shaping. Dr. Fornoni highlights that WCN’26 offers “a unique opportunity for global visibility, with excellent investigators from underserved regions providing important feedback on science implementation.” Dr. Davidson agrees, “It is excellent exposure of your work. I met my current collaborators through abstracts at WCN.”
And for those still hesitating to submit, the co-chairs encourage taking the leap. Dr. Fornoni stresses the value of early feedback: “If you feel the science is not yet strong enough, this is the time to put it out there and get feedback! Early guidance is key to success in research.” Echoing this point, Dr. Davidson reassures: “All good research is based on initial pilot data. It is a great way to refine your ‘bigger’ research idea.”
