Turning clinical experience into shared knowledge: ISN launches Kidney International Case Reports
The ISN has launched Kidney International Case Reports (KICR), a new open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to high-quality case reports, focused reviews, and short clinical communications relevant to kidney care. The publication is led by Editor-in-Chief Swapnil Hiremath (University of Ottawa, Canada) and Deputy Editor Arvind Conjeevaram (Trustwell Hospitals, Bengaluru, India).
KICR is now accepting submissions. Find out more about the journal and how to submit.
Professor Hiremath explained: “There are very few journals in nephrology that are purely focused on publishing case reports. However, the medical community does learn from individual cases, and not just from large observational studies or epidemiology or clinical trials.”
Dr. Conjeevaram added, “You learn on the job when you see complex cases in your clinic or as inpatients. Reading case reports gives you a ringside view on how to investigate/manage similar cases when they present to you.”
The journal will highlight interesting clinical presentations, diagnostic challenges, novel pathology or imaging findings, and innovative approaches to kidney care — particularly from resource-limited settings. KICR seeks submissions from authors worldwide, with a focus on trainees and early-career faculty. Publication fees will be waived for all authors from December 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026, with a 50% discount available in 2027.
“The most common issue with accessing education is paywalls and subscription fees. We want the articles and education provided by KICR to be as widely accessible as possible,” stated Professor Hiremath.
With its focus on clinical relevance, accessibility, and global representation, KICR aims to grow through contributions from clinicians who present challenging, illustrative, or practice-changing cases.
Authors are invited to submit their work and help build a truly international platform for case-based learning.
